Kelly Family Orthodontics

Design Challenges & FX Design's Approach

Written by Laura Bordeaux

Dr.’s Gillian and Michael Kelly are a young Orthodontics couple who purchased a practice in Middletown, CT.  They were referred to FX Dental Design by Dr. Campbell, to update their practice to communicate a clean, modern, leading edge environment. They requested we expand their Ortho Bay to add one or two more stations. Their expectation was for us to create an open, bright Ortho Bay for their patients to enjoy.

The Kelly's requested a viewing window from their office into the bay that would not make patients feel they were being monitored.  They had one consult room in the rear of their practice with high vaulted ceilings. They asked Laura Bordeaux if she could figure out a way to open up the ceilings to the roof line height in as much of their building as possible.

The first priority was to site measure the existing layout and implement into an Auto CAD format.

The existing space was divided into rooms & corridors. FX Design’s team determined that eliminating corridors would be the best method to create an open Ortho Bay and brushing station. Laura suggested countersinking the mechanical box access panels in the floor below each station’s Ortho chair allowing access to the air, electrical and water valves below.

FX Design brought in a structural engineer to calculate roof loads and horizontal beam locations which allowed us to raise the ceilings to 15 ft in as many areas as possible. Once we determined which areas would have high ceilings, we worked with the Kelly's to select modernistic lighting to provide sculptural shapes, drawing the eye upward.

The Kelly's requested a fresh clean color pallet, so we selected shades of blue, accented with stainless steel and whites. Floors were accented with a woven blue LVT that flowed like a river, meandering from the waiting area, past the check in, directing teens and young adults to the brushing station.  These same curvilinear shapes were repeated in the front face of the check in and out station. Undulating stone texture behind the check in station became the focal point for the Kelly Family Orthodontic logo.

By expanding the front foyer into the check in desk area, we were able to create sweeping views and an open feeling when entering the office. The waiting area provided teens and their parents all the comforts of home, with specialty features, such as a Keurig coffee and filtered water dispenser, flat screen TV, cell phone charging stations, children's books, toys and magazines with ample natural light to relax while they wait.

New patient exam, consult and records, Panoramic x-ray rooms were located in the front North wing.

The Kelly's private office was moved from the front to the center, adjacent to the Ortho Bay. FX Design selected a royal blue woven glass pattern for their viewing window. The Ortho Bay was equipped with new    A-dec Dental chairs; each included an LED dental operatory light. Benches where strategically built-in around perimeter walls for waiting family members. We also developed a unique Steri-Lab room, adding an access door from inside the sterilization room with a pass-through door to the Ortho Bay. The brushing station was designed with a central high sink & two low sinks to accommodate all heights and wheelchair user patients. It was accented with crisp white quartz counters, luminescent mosaic tile backsplash and rear lit mirrors.
